Kai Lenny Pushes the Boundaries by Unveiling New Hydrofoil Race Board

While all eyes are on Maui this weekend to see who will triumph in the 8th Annual OluKai Ho’olaule’a, Kai Lenny made us temporarily shift focus after dropping this crazy little nugget on Instagram a few hours ago.

That’s Kai somewhere along the Maliko run (the venue of this weekend’s big race) on what can only be described as a mutant hydrofoil race board.

From the photo it looks like a 12’6 Naish race board that’s been chopped in half and had a big foil attached to the bottom. I don’t know much more about the creation, but I do know it was designed by Maui’s well known foil board maker Alex Aguera, who has a history of creating kiteboard hydrofoils.

Kai, who is well known for playing on virtually every type of ocean craft known to man, has been experimenting with foil boarding a fair bit lately. He’s been spotted with a SUP surfing foil plenty of times, but this is the first time we’ve seen him out in the ocean on a race board (or at least, half a race board).

The superstar of SUP continues to push the boundaries.
