Unlimited Downwinder Down Under

Check out this great little clip from a new year’s downwinder in Brisbane, Australia.

That’s NSP’s own Dale Chapman wearing the GoPro, paddling the 17’10” unlimited that he helped bring to life along with NSP designer Alain Teurquetil. This is the exact same model board that Travis Grant paddled to victory in Molokai last year (see “The Story Behind Travis Grant’s Magic Molokai Board” for more).

Seems like Brisbane is starting to emerge as the best kept secret in Aussie downwinding. The capital of Queensland is sandwiched between the two far-more-famous paddling strips, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, however the city apparently gets some awesome bumps of its own.

The wide open expanse of Moreton Bay, which connects Brisbane with the Pacific Ocean, regularly whips up 30 knot downwind sessions that are cultivating a good local paddling community (see this video for example) while also drawing in the international athletes that live an hour away down on the Gold Coast.
